100 mile lawn mower push

Green Team Volunteer, Andy Barrett, is attempting a 100 mile lawn mower push! The event is to raise funds for The Green Team and another local charity, Castaways Music Theatre. The event is due to start on 12th December – Andy will be dressed as Father Christmas and will push his mower “Rudolf” around a 5 mile route through Goole, aiming to complete 4 laps a day for 5 days. Green Team Volunteers will be joining Andy for his final 5 miles on 16th December, finishing at West Park, Goole at 3pm.

Andy said about the event: “I had the idea for a sponsored mower push last autumn. I wanted an event that linked with the work we do, it also needed to be a little out of the ordinary. I wanted to raise funds and awareness of the charity, as my way to say thank you for helping get my life back on track. When I started with The Team I was very depressed and had little self-confidence but The Green Team helped me to find myself again. I clearly remember the moment I identified the strange feeling I had. It was pride. We are an amazing charity and we do amazing things for our community, it’s impossible to be part of this and not be proud. Now my role as Volunteer has advanced I have the confidence to supervise jobs and to help mentor other Volunteers, its a great privilege.”
“The decision to split the funds raised came this summer, after The Team went to watch Castaways performance of The Addams Family. 3 of our Volunteers were in the show and it was spine-chillingly spectacular. Watching friends I had made through The Green Team helped me realise our two charities do the same thing through different approaches. We both help vulnerable people in the community to be active, to learn life skills, to build their own confidence and PRIDE. Also I wanted to thank Castaways for their work with my son – he attends their shipmates group and they have transformed his life.”
