Following the concerns recently raised on face book, The Green Team would like to make the following statement:
The Green Team has been operating in Goole for 20 years, during that time we have regularly worked with and helped individuals from many organisations, statutory, Charity and private – including the Probation Service. There have never been any incidents that have adversely affected or caused us to question either our philosophy or methods, however this recent data breach and the depth of feeling shown on face book has made us re-evaluate our position.
The individuals who were the subjects of this post are no longer working with The Green Team or The Green Team Works CIC. This information has been advised to all the necessary authorities. A full report of the incident, public reaction and our subsequent investigation and outcome of that investigation has been forwarded to The Charity Commission.
Going forward, whilst the organisation still passionately believes that anyone who genuinely wants to move their lives forward should be allowed, whatever past misdemeanours there may have been, to have that opportunity. The Green Team has always looked at the person as presented and tried not to be judgemental of the historical information. Those judgements are for other authorities to make.
However as parents and grandparents we can understand that some crimes are more emotive than others and that public perceptions and feelings have to be taken in consideration within our decision making process. We therefore have decided that we will interact with the probation service in a very limited capacity.
Whilst we understand the emotions that have been and are still being expressed we would like the community of Goole to know that we have always been assured by the Probation Service that they would not place anyone with ourselves whom they feel would pose a risk to our volunteers, the general public, our clients or those in their care.
These events have had a negative effect not only on the public of Goole but in the short term the ability of The Green Team to offer the gardening service at the levels previously provided and has adversely affected our short term cash flow and financial position, however with the support of the community we can move forward and continue to provide a valuable and important service to Goole.

‘The Green Team is a dream team!’ That’s according to journalist Emily Collins who visited The Green Team recently. Emily had a tour of our site at West Park and experienced first hand the working / training environments of our community cafe and mini garden centre. She met with volunteers and asked them about their own experiences with the organisation and how working with us had benefitted them personally. Emily was quite blown away with what we do and sent her article to a the local ‘Howdenshire Magazine’ in which it was published in the April / May edition earlier this year! Well, this has now gone one step further as Emily wrote a second article which has been published in the national ‘Kitchen Garden’ magazine! We have an amazing four page spread that is just a couple of pages away from an article on Prince Charles!
The magazine is currently on sale from all good stockists. Thank you to Emily for such a wonderful article which will hopefully generate interest of our organisation on a national level.

Volunteers and staff recently took part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for The Green Team charity. They walked a 3 mile route around Goole, calling in at local businesses for a photo opportunity and to collect charity donation boxes – thank you very much for having those for us. Sincere thanks also go to our customers that sent in donations to be put towards the sponsored event and to our wonderful volunteers that put so much effort into their outfits – you all looked fabulous and did so well with your sponsorship. To date, the grand total raised is an amazing £1047.26! Please take a look on our gallery for all of the great photographs from the day.
In recognition of the valuable time that our volunteers give to our charity, The Trustees of The Green Team once again wanted to treat them to a day out. This year, our annual summer trip was to Bridlington. The weather was kind to us (unlike last year!) and we enjoyed a walk along the promenade, a fish and chip lunch and football on the beach. Take a look at our photographs on our ‘gallery’ section. Many thanks to our customers that gave donations towards the cost of our annual trip.
Charity Vehicle Theft
On Tuesday 11th September around 6pm, one of our vehicles (white cage van in photograph) was stolen, leaving us with just one remaining vehicle.
• Having only one vehicle means that we cannot service all of the gardens of our customers.
• Having only one vehicle means that we are having to turn some of our volunteers away.
• Having only one vehicle means that we cannot generate much needed revenue.
We would love to see our vehicle returned to us. If you have any information please let the Police know. If you, or anyone you know, may be able to help us out at this time with the loan of a vehicle on a temporary basis, please forward this appeal on or get in touch with us.
We are a charity with exceptionally tight finances at present and this has only added to the situation. If you would like to make a donation, we would be very grateful.
Join us for a hanging basket workshop in our Training Room at West Park – supporting a local charity at the same time. Would you like to create your own hanging basket this year? Cost £15 per person, includes refreshments. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Tel 01405 837126 to book a place. All profits to go directly to our Green Team charity and will be used to purchase seeds and compost, enabling our volunteers to grow and nurture more lovely plants! Thank you for your continued support.
Many thanks to the staff at the Nationwide Building Society for allowing us to hold an Easter plant sale in their Goole branch, enabling us to raise funds for our charity. Volunteers from our Table Top Gardening Group set up the stall and stood for the day and sold plants to members of the public. A variety of spring bulbs were available to purchase along with specially themed Easter table centres.
We held a spring plant sale at The Courtyard selling a variety of spring bulbs including hyacinths, crocus, daffodils and tulips which everyone said looked and smelt beautiful. The plants have been nurtured at The Green Team poly tunnels at West Park by volunteers from our Table Top Gardening Group. Thank you to our host – The Courtyard and special thanks to our dedicated volunteer team for their hard work.
A huge ‘well done’ to our very own Green Team Volunteer Andy Barrett who, before Christmas, once again took to the streets dressed as Santa whilst pushing a lawn mower (with antlers and a red nose!) named ‘Rudolf!’ Amazingly, Andy successfully completed 5 marathons over 5 days totting up a very impressive 131 miles! He did this as a sponsored event and we are pleased to announce that he has raised a magnificent £1500.46! All of this money will be split between 2 local charities – The Green Team and Castaways. Andy completed a similar sponsored event the previous year, pushing his lawn mower named Rudolf for 20 miles a day over 5 days around Goole but wanted to top this, this year… and he did! Thank you so very much to everyone that sponsored Andy or that donated directly into his bucket, that stopped him in the street, that hung out of car windows, the roofer that threw down money (and landed in the bucket – what a shot!), that gave money online via BT My Donate (still open) and thank you especially to the lady that so very kindly emptied the contents of her purse into the bucket. Finally, once again, Andy Barrett – WE THANK YOU.
Our Green Team charity in Goole is pleased to announce the recent launch of ‘The Green Team Works C.I.C.’ – available now for commercial garden/grounds maintenance work.
The Green Team charity has been offering a low cost garden maintenance service in Goole and surrounding areas for 19 years and now, in addition to current services, have formed a Community Interest Company – ‘The Green Team Works C.I.C,’ which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the charity. One of the aims of the C.I.C. is to carry out garden or grounds maintenance work at commercial rates for those who do not qualify for the low cost charity service. All profits generated from the C.I.C. will be gifted to the charity, enabling it to become less reliant on external funding and to ensure its longevity within the community. Read more about our new commercial venture in our ‘Find Out More’ tab at the top of this page. We invite you to telephone our office on 01405 837126 for a no obligation quote.
Karen Needs, who works for Goole Citizens Advice Bureau, joined our Garden Maintenance Team for a session. Karen is a Key Worker for the CAB project ‘Action Towards Inclusion’ and after hearing about the work that we do, was interested to have some hands on experience.
Karen said, ‘thanks for letting me come along to see what The Green Team do – I really enjoyed my morning in the poly tunnels and my afternoon out on the van. It was great to chat to the volunteers and staff about the organisation and I think it will be really useful to pass information on to potential volunteers. Thanks also to Dave and the team for looking after me and showing me how to use the lawnmower.
Thank you to everyone that attended or helped at our recent AGM. Volunteers, Trustees, Members and Guests turned out in record numbers and helped to make it a truly memorable event! We are pleased to announce that we have been successful in securing funding from the Big Lottery to the value of £147,500.00. This award is specifically to enable The Green Team to develop the ‘Volunteer Journey’ project and to set up a wholly owned Community Interest Company. The ‘Volunteer Journey’ is designed to train and prepare individuals for the job market, initially learning basic employability skills such as time keeping, team work and commitment, developing self-esteem and confidence. Following a period of volunteering, individuals will have the opportunity to apply for short term, paid employment – working on our new commercial gardening service, whilst also receiving intensive employability training in applications, interview skills and personal development. These employment packages will not be a ‘rite of passage’ and each individual will have to prove their commitment and desire to want to move into employment. Grateful thanks from all at The Green Team go to the National Lottery players for their support towards enabling this project to develop.
A huge ‘WELL DONE!’ to our Green Team Volunteer Liam Holland on completing his week long, 125 mile, sponsored bike ride around Goole – completing it over 5 days. Liam, who has been a Volunteer with The Green Team for a year now, was inspired to do a sponsored event by Green Team Volunteer Andy Barrett’s sponsored event just before Christmas when he pushed a lawn mower named Rudolf around Goole. Liam has decided that he would like all of his sponsorship money to be split between 2 local charities – The Green Team and Castaway. If you would like to sponsor Liam please call into the Green Team office in The Courtyard. So far, Liam has raised £375.50, which we think is amazing! Congratulations and our grateful thanks to Liam.

Whilst working with us you will be:
- giving your time to a local charity that benefits local people
- increasing your knowledge and skills
- meeting new people and working as part of a team
- getting to know people and places in the community
- helping people in need and making a difference
Goole College understands the importance volunteers play in the local community and recently hosted an event to raise awareness and provide information on how to get involved with local organisations. On Wednesday 26 April, organisations such as accessible music theatre Castaway Goole, VYPER (Volunteering for Young People within East Riding), garden maintenance service ‘The Green Team’, Volunteen, British Heart Foundation and The Army Reserve visited the college to speak to students and provide information about becoming a volunteer. The event was organised by the Goole College Information, Advice and Guidance Team and the Careers Team who took the opportunity to promote the benefits of volunteering to our staff and students. The event was well attended and more sessions are planned for the future.
